2003

Performance Writing Sharing, Zoom, May 2020

2003 was a live zoom performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Made in response to moving back to her parents’ house for the first time since childhood, 2003 is a conversation between 2020 Sally and 2003 Sally inspired by an event that occurred in 2003.

In February of 2003, Sally attended a demonstration at Trafalgar Square opposing the British invasion of Iraq. She attended this demonstration dressed as a flower fairy, adorned with a sticker that read ‘No More Lies’. A poet approached her gran, who she was with, and asked if he could write a poem about her that he would later post. A few weeks later, as promised, a poem titled ‘Little Flower Fairy’ arrived in the post.

In this piece, Sally attempted to communicate with Little Flower Fairy, through a green screen and through the zoom chat box. She apologised to Little Flower Fairy, for how little has changed, how the patterns of British Imperialism and violence remain the same, how ‘the figures have different names, but they are still not listening’.

The day after this piece, Sally walked the route from the flat she lived in 2003 in Tufnell Park, North London to Trafalgar Square and installed a performance score alongside Nelson’s Column and the Landseer Lions. The documentation of this can be found here.
